An Art challenge for February from KM for
Calypso Moon Artist Movement
Using one color with black and white....I chose, are you ready?... RED!
It is a healthy colour I am thinking. Lots of things I really like are red... peppers, pomegranates, carnelian, rubies! garnets! lipsticks, polish for the nails...etc.
This is the second self portrait I have done in my long and illustrious career as a portrait artist!
Artists are urged to look at Vincent Van Gogh self portraits, which, as it happens, I have a photo detail...live from Musee d'Orsay, which I just recently did a walk through.
The interconnectedness of life!

Elaine, that portrait you did of yourself is phenomenal!! I love the three colors...Limited palettes force one to work on values, doesn't it? I've never tried it, I don't think. And for the record, I find Van Gogh quite a handsome guy!
ReplyDeleteElaine your portrait is so expressive. I see a very sly mischievous fox in this woman. The multiple textures you've done create lots of movement around the composition and the red you choose makes me think of a fine vintage red wine. Beautiful entry.
ReplyDeleteOh My...you got right on this! I'm working on it, but as usual I have gotten very involved on what started out as a quick sketch!
ReplyDeleteElaine, red becomes you with that very satisfied looking smile on your face. Excellent choice and excellent portrait.
ReplyDeleteI love that smile, too. It's a knowing smile and one that says, hey, everything's gonna be alright. I think we all need to see more smiles like that in the world! Glad you joined in with us, and your portrait of Karin is also really nice.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful self portrait. I always have lots of red in my life.
ReplyDeleteYou so know yourself because red is you! I'd also say you picked a perfect reference photo but every photo you take probably has a lot of energy and shine to it!
ReplyDeleteelaine,
ReplyDeleteexcellent work..
proved that you don't need much colours to be a colourful artist......
Elaine, You were plainly channeling Georges Rouault when you were painting this, with glorious results. Viewing your painting makes me want to know the woman behind that wry smile. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThank you, each and every one, for your comments. The feedback is marvelous.
ReplyDeleteElaine - wonderful self-portrait! Great texture and love your expression! I'm sure you had a lot of fun with this challenge, it shows in your work.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great blog...very creative!
Gorgeous as you are, Elaine!
