quick notes...I have a few minutes before we go off to hunt for dinner..!!!
AAHHHHHhhhh. The Spice Bazaar! Sweets and dried fruit and nuts and perfume and... spices...
A date and some pistachio nuts!

Have you every been in a Turkish Bath?
I forgot to mention the Turkish Bath the other day... wow. (no Photos,as you can well imagine) Invigorating relaxation. A steamy marble room to sweat, then a fellow simply dressed in a thin towel begins with the vigorous skin peeling, a soap bubble wash, a massage.and then one sits on the side by huge sinks and water is poured over. Then you sit for a while in a little cubicle with a divan drinking tea. For the next few days, you will find yourself so in love with your smooth skin. Luxury.

Mosques and palaces... I got to say this great line aloud... 'I will meet you at the Dolmabahche palace gate at 3.'

No photos in that palace. But it has literally tons of chandeliers, one of them is 4 tons of crystals...
... The trams, the underground metro, cabs walking..
Constantine, sultans... these cobble stone streets are deep in history.

These geometric designs are based in the perfect circle. Today's images are all from the Toplapi Palace.
The drapes had gold plates of jewels..
...where did I leave those earrings? (a whole new twist on the I saw it in the window and just couldn't resist.)

The crowds of Taksim Square. Birds and cats and dogs. The men calling out by the carts on the street selling... everything.The astounding blue of the Bosphorus. The colors of Ottoman reds. Pearls the size of a thumb. 82 karat diamonds. Emeralds and rubies. The patterns in the tile work.
It is simply exotically exquisite.

Although most of the following images concern food and that may make it seem like eating is the predominant activity, there really are so very many other things to see and do than eat, so we have heard.

Here is the breakfast included with the room....

cheese, eggs, olives, yogurt, borek...cheese or spinach, or olives or..filled homemade phyllo pastry, juices, toast

Yesterday was a cloudy cool day...like 5 Celsius. We went to the Archeological Museum for a four hour stroll through three thousand years or more of history...

Then we went for dinner ...pistachio lamb kebabs, saladarama, the sesame covered airfilled flat bread with feta... raki, which is the anise flavored liquor, and coffee. The owner of the restaurant came over to give the recipe for the kebabs and tips on how to make them. It was all very jolly, as moment are directly after shots of liquor. Then we toddled off to the nargile rooms to inhale apple tobacco. Alice in Wonderland. The live music is drums and the kannone. And Loreena McKennit music while the band took a break!

The day before... the Bosphorus Cruise to the Black Sea

This was a day trip to a village on the Black Sea. The boat trip was the event. I could still feel the motion hours later.

Here we go... Valentine's Day. Which happens to also be the Prophet Mohammed's Birthday...

We went over to the Asian side of Istanbul because the front desk woman said it would be crazy busy in the historical section.
Here is... the fish market. On the other camera there are some pretty fabulous fish pictures ...ahhh so much food, so little room in the tum...

Walk and walk and walk. The feast is for the eyes...St Sophia cathedral, the GRAND BAZAAR, dinner at the fish restaurant...
I went to bed (what a live wire that one is),Elgar and Len went to the live entertainment nargile(hookah) evening.

Really really really it is amazing. This mornings call to prayer was an outstanding voice.

The head of the blue fish is, apparently delicious.

The Grand Bazaar is miles and miles of shops. Jewelry, leather, fabrics (oh my word)
carpets, food, antiques. We were only there for three hours and covered a small,small area of it.

This is not just a regular cat. This is a diplocat... this cat has greeted and been petted by President Obama. The cat, said nothing just smiled politely.

Tooo amazing...more cathedral

Astounding!

I should mention... pomegranates are in season. Fresh pomegranate juice mixed with orange. OMG.
Nougat, when it is fresh, is actually like a thick marshmallowy thing. With pistachios. Halvah fresh is ... I shall stop with the odious comparisons.

When I opened my eyes this morning...this is what I saw. Life, my sweet, is good. Earlier, before I opened my eyes, the muezzine called for a prayerful moment.

This hotel is, obviously, right in the midst of the historical Istanbul. Turkish breakfast is taken on the top floor that has a terrace overlooking the Marmar Sea on one side and the Mosques, Blue and White and AyaSofia and and and...the bazaar.
It is not the high tourist season. So many things to tell already and it is the first, take it easy day... (breakfst is an array of items, the yogurt is delicious, homemade sour cherry jam, cheeses, bread...Oh and dinner last night... MAN!!!

Some of the bluetiles on the inside of the Blue Mosque. The architectural shenanigans of this building bring one to tears.. beauty

A fellow pops up to explain the sites... he waits for us after we walk through the mosque.. then brings us though the gardens and off over to this area and that and then...well here we are at the carpet shop!!! The salesmanship here is superb! (we are not buying a carpet for heaven's sake.) It is a family business. It is destiny that has brought you to me. You will buy only the piece of art, history and imagination, the good feeling of a young woman poured into the work for years.. (seriously, we aren't buying a carpet) it is impossible for two carpets to ever be the same... it is never about profit it is about making good connections...

So... what do you think of the new carpet?

today's foggy seascape...
We got up early and trotted off down the street to the Hubbard's Barn farmer's market because I was going to surprise Anna The Hat Junkie.
The surprise was for me. She wasn't there today. But the market is charming... of course. Everything is.

SEE? a cove.

We went off to the neighbour's house on the ocean... this is the view from the deck.

The lighthouse at Peggy's Cove. The clouds were fabulous in the background der eh?

The first day we were here, we went to the beach for the day...it was really warm and sunny. Then there is mist, rain, fog, sun... neato.

The dinners so far... mackeral, haddock, cod, mussels... home by the sea.

Halifax and the lobster feast is up for tomorrow!

Painting sideways and upside down so the technique and brushstokes are visible to the students. I will incorporate this into the other paintings as a new technique!

The last class on florals was great. A good Friday night painting session with the ladies! Nothing like a group of women laughing about the frailties of the body as they create to get the balance and perspective in place. Not just on the painting!

I have graduated from the contraption to a 'knee immobilizer' -a beige leg corset with velcro instead of strings. Sexy!
So I will be the one haplessly kicking over chairs and dragging tables behind her over this week!

I will be the one hobbling...
I crashed my right knee into the corner and tore a few of the very important ligaments off of it... I have a splishy quad muscle collection that makes the knee unbendable.

I can walk with the aid of a scarf contraption tied around the foot crossed over to the (k)neck and a pulley(my arm basically) to make the leg move forward. it is two scarves actually, (I got them for free with a purchase over $25 at Cotton Ginny years ago. Well I was there with my sister and she didn't want hers so she said I could have it and the clerk had to check with the manager if that was ok and everything so we told her that my sister would take it and then give it to me.. or not! outside of the store if that would make things less complicated. One is mauve and the other a sherbet orange color.
Now you know.)

Open grisaille- a method of underpainting to get the values. I love these... they can look DONE!

I got to hear this line last night... 'I paint but I cannot draw.' What a place to leave oneself! Another person said that she had heard that anyone can draw. This provoked a few contradictions about artistic bones and bodies...

Here is the answer... are you ready?... any one can draw. It may not appear anything like what they are looking at, but lines can be made. The skill, and it is that, a skill, is in the ability to really see what is there.

Magical, huh? Mystical, hmm?

Rather than painting what one thinks one sees with the eyes of assumption.
BEWARE- the assumption eyes! They miss out on a lot of information.

A great exercise for this is, let's say we are working with a photo here, to turn the subject upside down and paint the shapes.

Learn all the rules so you know exactly where and how to break them, quickly and painlessly.

Perhaps there is still time to change the name of the exhibit to -watching the paint dry-...

The Glamourous Life of An Artist...

Study-ala Christine Lafuente 6"x6" oil on hardboard.
What, tell me what is more inspiring than trying to replicate another artist's work, as a practice! that you admire profoundly. Here is my rendition of Christine Lafuente's 'Zinnias and Melon' I love the sliding slither of paint in her work. Liquid fluid Impressionism. And yet, it holds cohesive. The colors she uses are so very...delicious.
So the exercise is this, find a style that you truly admire. Paint like that. You will be surprised at how much information is in a brushstroke.

Because the sketch for this painting(see previous previous posting)was loose and relaxed, flowing, I just had to invite myself to express that in the painting.
This practice of duplication from another person style is Learning. It provides an opportunity to develop the eye hand coordination in yet another direction. Every one is so very unique that we will always be ourselves. This practice gives one a bit a view, the tiniest one, into the Way of someone else.

(excerpt from CHAPTER 11 in What to BE?...AN ARTIST!)

Whether you choose flowers, vegetables, pets, sweeping majestic landscapes... practice, that pesky repetition, is the only way that the magic of your subject will reveal itself to you. Seduction is a necessary art ....within art... well, in so very many aspects of life. (it is simply a coincidence that this is the image going along with these words, I haven't been working on lemons recently...)
These sketches are references for sketches in other mediums. For these I used washes in oil paints. But I can use them for the pose and gesture, add clothes, add different props. That is why it is good to have the original drawing from the model.
I have included this one because I really like it and... it has a contribution by the creative or is it just curious, CAT...

3 (continued from the previous post) Libido. Like an appetite. Like you are starving, suffocating, dying of thirst without it.

This is a very important part of the practice. Whetting the appetite of desire to create. Finding that ironic, paradoxically exquisite balance -on the edge of hunger and satiation. Knowing...

What to be... an Artist.

You actually only have to know how to draw one thing… pick it… a lemon, a body.. a cat.
Draw this two thousand times and you will find that you can draw pretty much anything.

Although I have heard of artists that work more with form and color, I am very fond of using Renoir's wry line...'First learn your craft. It won't prevent you from becoming a genius later.'
Learn to draw something. Because this is how you learn to really see…everything that is there as well as everything that is not there which, paradoxically, is equally important.

You will need

1 Nerves of Steel
Live like you mean it. No one will give you approval, support, large quantities of money, with the possible exception of your mother… and any therapist will tell you that, anyway, at some point it becomes your job.

There are a few exercises one can do for this. Quite a lot really. You will find them coming to you daily! Is that abundance or what? Think of something to do that terrifies you beyond the capacity for rational thought and do it. Fearlessness is an essential quality of the great artist.
Although the whine and snivel has been a far too overdone stance, the great artist is much too busy with the experience that translates to marketing to really spend too much time on this. And that’s good for the world. Be good for the world.

Finding that you are totally absolutely in love with yourself is great for the nerves.
There are a few exercises for this as well, of course. Books of them really. Sometimes, I have noticed, people get really hung up on the exercises and pass the point of it, let’s say about 93 times a day. This is really as simple as breathing. Which can be another place that the self evident is missed. Breathe.

Great … got those two things? Now you can Be yourself. This is the point. How YOU see it, what YOU think, how YOU got to this moment what is YOU? This is what you are expressing…kinda like those little machines do for coffee. Fffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttt!!

Are we not living in the most magical time? We can create and destroy worlds. We can have the awareness that we make this choice moment to moment, if we choose to.
I am sure, absolutely certain in fact, that everyone has the manifestation moment, when a thought gently surfaces in the mind, and voila! in a short time it is the current experience.
The person phones, the Chinese food is delivered to your door, the perfect chair is just given to you... a manifestation moment.
Painting, for me, is that place of non thinking gentle surfacing. It is a good place to imagine those experiences that I have had or look forward to having... and share them with you.

The medicine wheel of Truth- one of the 7 Grandfather teachings. The Medicine Wheel is an allegory of the journey that each of us take in this time/space that we call life.
These paintings of the teachings are a type of meditation in the landscapes. How the landscape of the earth reflects as the landscapes of our minds.
Each one of them has a real leaf.. a gigantic leaf from the trembling aspen- poplar tree. The first year saplings have these enormous leaves.

These paintings, all seven of them! are acrylic and mixed mediums on canvas. 36"x24" They are currently framed in black shadow box frames.

Pick your Gods.
As a visual artist one has the moments of being awestruck by the work of another artist. In studying, replicating, immersing oneself in the all of the work of that artist is a way to understanding one's own abilities and talents.

There is a tremendous merit in this exercise as a study, I have found. It is another way of training the eye and developing the co ordination between the hand and eye. One always finds in this an even more profound respect and admiration for the life and spirit of the person.

The Glamourous Life- Love, The Studio Diary, and other tools of the trade

My friend Bea and I took a workshop the other weekend given by Les Graff. He had an number of really great ideas for keeping track of one's professional standing .. one of which was a studio diary. A book, scribbler, binder, journal of what was done in the studio today. I use this blog like that somewhat. ...I'll have to move the computer into the studio. Then the diary would have... 2 hours looking at websites, taking really dumb quizzes on facebook... Yikes!

Today's diary has that I worked for a couple of hours on the book cover commission. The Windigo and Nanabozho.
I talked to my beautiful sister, about Nanabozho. Thomas King. We laughed out loud and long.
Then I read some of Three Day Road.Joseph Boyden, Not so funny. Then I thought about the Windigos in my life and the way the creative force, Nanabozho, by embracing them makes something .
How one is the other in the way energy transforms.

Starting off I am having all kinds of fun with the fabric in the background. Ah yes.. the shoes are the thing.

This commissioned piece is called My Sister's Shoes.
Shoe related... because these shoes are pretty interesting. Mirror is the title. I was interested in the hand on the hip, the tilt of the shoulders... I am still arguing with myself on the lighting... or the line? Perhaps a light line in the left armpit. What do you think?

Pastries: in specific....THE BISMARCK

My submission for the Calypso Moon Artist Movement April challenge. Bad... bad...bad ...umm..you aren't going to eat all of that by yourself, are you? food.

I know, to look at me you just wouldn't believe it. It's ok. Life is full of surprises like that.

So.. taking it from the top...crispy deep fried dough, filled with raspberry jam, coated with powdered sugar.... swoon

From the Empress Bakery (just over the way which is completely in the range of the everyday walk and I don't) Bismarck! oh yummy. Because why? Because they still fry them in lard. So they taste like they did in the 'olden' days. When grandma made donuts, which was... just a sec I will phone her... and ask... once a year!

Apparently this delectability is called a Bismarck only on the Canadian Prairies! It is also known as krapfen, Berlinner, or a jelly donut. Also, on the plate, is a type of Danish pastry cinnamon almond carameled sugar deliciousness. I love it when the pastry tastes, and that includes texture, as good as it looks.

They make fantastic farmer's rye bread, as well, at that bakery.
I love food.

To our health! Cheers.

What is in the works?

These three paintings are commissioned pieces - The Grand Kids ...so far. They are in costumes that somewhat reflect their interests or personalities.

It is an interesting proposition to paint someone only from a photo. There is so much more information in person. I did have an number of photos of each of the kids... and they aren't noted for their ability to sit still.

And on the movie script front... ...The main character is called Grace... she is a self help addict. It is a comedy...
and I will tell you more shortly...
Mostly because I would have to type something ...

Here is my relaxation project... another silk blouse! The pattern idea sketched out on an envelope is a perfect example of the idea of beauty that I mean to talk about. This is one point... I am not this shape, yet I am trained to draw and more importantly 'see' this shape. And that is just ideas of should in my head. This can be explained better... I will give it a think and get back to you on it!

Here it is! the buttons, which are not on yet, are glass baubles. I lovalovalove clothes!

Another picture from the Australia files... from a sketch of the same model, combined with furniture from one house and the breeze way of another. 16"x16"

The first time I saw a pomegranate growing on a tree was in Australia. The fruit was cracking open and falling off. The girl from the far-er north is standing there in a titter on the matter. These things are expensive in Edmonton! Mya.
There is such a rich lushness, even in the winter, for those few miles in from the coast. The earth is reds, ochres, and sands.

(I will do this one again.. her hip or the lighting is off on this one. or perhaps more shading is needed for the thigh... I like to re do a painting a few years later. It is interesting what differences have occurred in the triangle of understanding - the eye, hand, and the 'essence of what' that co ordinates them.)

World travels ....flying by the seat of my pants, which is situated on an seat in an airplane... there is, for me, nothing more alivening than just ...letting it happen.

It is such a practice to stay awake in familiar surroundings to see that amazing
things are happening.. we are just too... actually I don't know about you.. it may be this is my issue. I get on bikes, into cars, onto planes and stop some place and let it come to me. Alcohol may be a cheaper trip but I just don't have the constitution for it.

Through the conflagration of events that can only happen when one is wiiiidddde open I was getting off a bus in the pitch of pitch darkness dark side streets ... in the little town of Margaret River,Western Australia. You may have heard of it, previous to this. Wine Country. I was to call a number that I had copied onto paper from the last of a total of three emails I had received concerning a house sitting position. Up to this point... flying from Kuala Lampur to Perth, taking the 'milk run' bus to the town through the astounding Australian landscape....

There were all these little stories the bus driver had going with the people traveling.. Ok.Just one really good one..He had the people on the bus cheer hip hip hooray for a little guy taking the bus from his grandma's house to his parent's on his own. Everyone joined in, even the Gothed out teenagers.Even the Canadian that had a babble fish time delay for understanding anything being said!)

..it seemed pretty feasible. But standing on the unlit street with no idea where what who when or why.. These are fleeting thoughts. I started off toward the street with lighting. A Gas Station. I went in and asked if I could use the phone. He pointed to across the street... where, once one know what one is looking at, a couple of pay phone appeared!

I called the number on the crumpled piece of paper.
A Cheery Voice answered.

Ute! This is Elaine! I said

Oh great! she said. Where are you?

By the BP gas station.

Ok.. I'll call Stephan and he'll pick you up.. Your timing is perfect..he is just on his way home.

After a few moments, an energetic cheerful guy leaned out from the passenger side(in Canada/ US/Europe..) of the vehicle asking if I was me. I seemed to be. He leaped out, tossed my luggage into the back of the truck telling me to get
in, and, as I opened the door, said amusedly...I'll drive.
Right. Left. It takes some time to get used to. I have some very,very funny stories about driving in Australia.

And the meeting was perfect. They lived (still do) on an acreage that you can look out the living room window and watch the sun set on the sea. Stephan is a vet. Ute is an artist.

I was to stay for six weeks which became eight, in beautiful, luxurious conditions in return for feeding the pets. Turning the power back on after a storm... you know..

Two dogs, a cat, and... I am not kidding... two kangaroos!

In that time I met the drawing ladies, applied and got the artist in residence position which was in the Town of Margaret River so I stayed for another couple of months, toured Western Australia, the wine houses, vineyards, taught art classes...

Amazing things happen!

The Glamourous Life - Working it and Thoughts on Beauty

Notes from my Artist in Residence Winter 2006 Margaret River Western Australia.
Starting with this...a photo of the original five minute sketch- in pencil, white conte and ink from a model session at a woman's house. I love how they can just flow ...gesture drawing! The model was really good at holding difficult poses. She traveled around modeling in between her other job of are you ready?...herding sheep! Why not?!

From the original photo...to the shop of photos ...all this is on the laptop, you know. By deleting some of the color of brown paper, and enhancing the lines the image became this.

Which I used as the poster and invitations for the Isaac's Gallery Art Exhibit.
The painting...
There are fantastic trees, every where in the world for certain. I can only talk about the ones I have met.
Jarrah is a huge lumber tree in Australia. It is a red brown sensual. The theme of the exhibit came to be about the trees. And this painting has some of the furniture that is made from it as well as colors and patterns that sing with that Jarrah wood.

Meeting- One Mother is the title of this work.

It is Mixed Medium on hardboard. Being of an First Nation's kinda interest I was very keen to meet the Aboriginals. There is a sign on Cave's Road for the Wardandi Aboriginal Centre. This is the Land of Wardandi People, Wardan is the Ocean Spirit -one of 14 Nyungar tribes in this area. Because it was winter... I was usually the only one there. I told Trevor,the aboriginal guide through the center, I was doing a painting of the connection of peoples.
As we held hands, we looked into the earth worlds of each others eyes and beyond. One Breath.

On this painting is my hand print and Trevor's hand print and the ochre sand and the ocean that connects the land. One Breath

This week's phrase to make visual on http://www.theartistchallenge.com/ is, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.. or the imagination of the beholder. 'day dream' is an image that holds some of the comment. You know... writing about the meaning of my paintings is such a no go for me. I will use the analogy of Isadora Duncan's quote...'If I could tell you what it meant, there would be no point in dancing it.' Or painting it, in this instance.

The jewelery making results. I felt compelled to go to The Precious Gems store after wondering through the Art Gallery Alberta, again, with friends interested in the sculptures of Degas... The armature is very important in the casting you know! and I noticed some of the earrings on display at the Gift Shop, at which I spent only time and not money. There are designer bags made of bicycle tires spliced together and sewn to leather. Books!! and toys and Jewelery! Stainless steel rings with marvelous profiles. Earrings... Which reminded me that I had some ideas of earrings I would like... So here are the jewelery making results.

Collectors is the theme for this month's Calypso Moon Artist Movement Challenge. All the shoes in this painting have the potential to bring me to tears, for two reasons, their satisfying beauty and the hold they have on my foot... somewhere around the 3 hour standing/walking point I am prepared to weep.

What do these shoes say about me? Hmmm Here's what I can say about them.

Starting at the top... the black Fluevogs. I find that unusual shaped shoes can add that je ne sais quoi finish to a look. These have such an exaggerated toe, one is tempted to make the Cyrano jokes. One must take the elevator, baby, these aren't sport shoes. (um, one moment, it depends on the sport.)

The camel colored suede bow tie shoe...Baci... smoochy Italian, don't you know? are also very versatile, fashion wise. Cute, Darling, Adorable...the grosgrain ribbon is just the thing!

And peeking out from the side is the heel of Red Patent Leather Jimmy Choo 'Quiet' Pump.

The red shoes are just lovely at the Opera, Ballet, Chamber Music venue.
Wear them to the grocery store and a whole new world of possibilities walks up to talk to you.

Geez, hey? A fruity still life. Here is the second painting I have done in oil. Except this one came with instructions. My wonderful friend Beata, set up the still life in her studio... lights, background, easels... and we did the sixty minute challenge. (before anyone gets excited at the unlimited painting possibilities, I will point out...Of course, it took an hour to set up and an hour to clean up.)
Why have I resisted using oil paints? Perhaps I heard a scary story about the toxicity. Perhaps all the painting classes I have had have been using acrylics. Isn't English peculiar.. check out all the having in that last sentence!
Whatever the way... now that we have met...I love them.. I love the slinky-ness of them...I can see the oil paint fanatics point!

The birthday celebrations yielded the gifts of flowers... vases of flowers. Roses, daffodils, all varieties of chrysanthemums, tulips, daisies... beautiful. These photos are from the amazing birthday camera. And photoshop-ed a bit for interest sake. Bringing out those values, hmm?!

I love my birthday! One cannot leave a great birthday to chance. It seems a lot of people do this...just expecting that some 'one' cares enough to make a huge deal about their birthday... Talk about naive! It is our job, and a pretty important one at that, to always be offering the opportunity for people to come to love us. Useful suggestions, helpful hints
with enough lead time for the working of wonders makes for a fantastic day. The requirement for adoration, come on, every one needs love, has to be spread over as many friends and lovers, if one is given to that way, as possible if you want big hit. Then no one feels over taxed, you know?
Nutrition- LoML(LoveofMyLife) made the Special Family Secret Chili, one vat. (Did all the dishes, had the coffee on, beer flowing, all day from 2pm- 1 am.) And made...his very own absolutely delicious version of Orange Chiffon Cake. The optional topping was Grand Marnier Whipping Cream. The Cake with the Fire Works candle! Really! What a Man!
Fashion- This is the blouse I made from the silk bought in Paris. Very Nice. The Fur Kiss in this story is the bustier. (Just to be clear... I don't usually discuss my underclothing this publicly unless I design something that is toooo amusing of an idea just to keep under wraps. whaakawaka) Black lace, underwires and long haired fun fur cups! Perhaps Victoria already has this tickly secret.

It is MY HAPPY BIRTHDAY. 51. A Personal New Year.
I intend to collect all 80 of them. Gracefully, graciously... or not.

I mean to walk that narrow line, in semi high heels, between tasteful furry leopard prints pants and, let's say... spandex full body suits in leopard prints. Which is a look that I, here is the graciousness already!, will spare you.
I intend, just a sec, I have to get these damn shoes off, they are gorgeous but ornamental, ...to really pay attention to my intuition, really get to know myself.

It is a popular activity at this age. I can see why. The world gets blippier and blippier and it turns out, kinda remarkably, that I am the stability in the picture. Phhha.

I intend to do justice to the term 'Elder'. It is funnier than you think. There. Wisdom.

Even though I have been advised by a fashion expert, my sister, that blue eye shadow is not attractive on anybody, absolutely anybody, at any age, (she was that adamant) I was only temporarily disappointed.
It may be in style, which we all know has little to nothing to do with looking good, in 9 years. At which point I believe, I have promised myself that I can wear it. For some people a purple hat signals the insouciance of age ... for me, it is blue eye shadow. Sparkly, cobalt blue smeared liberally over the eyelid, almost, but not quite, up to the brow... perhaps a few daring daubs flirting a little too close to the nose. I can hardly wait.

And a laugh like a gatling gun. Which one has to practice. Frequently, so most people around one aren't startled. Kind, huh?

Already it sounds so superficial... all about looks.
I intend to finally be OK with that. Anything fractious from this moment on will be met with.... SO? Very versatile, in intonations. So? SO! so? See?

Oh yes.. to finish that thread started earlier about listening to myself. I mean to share the information. With every and any one that cares to listen. I may even offer the occasional zinger even those who don't, care to listen, that is.

Because I am 51 and wise.

Don't we just bring the emotions to the piece? The acrylic... I was thinking how I just love working with these, I feel confident in the result.
The pastel, calm, watching what the pastels were doing rather than thinking I was telling them what to do.

It is a healthy colour I am thinking. Lots of things I really like are red... peppers, pomegranates, carnelian, rubies! garnets! lipsticks, polish for the nails...etc.

Blessedness

like being busier than a one legged man in a bum kicking contest....

There was a meeting for a organizing a festival called Creative Aging. I need, of course, another interest...

Many different senior groups were represented at this meeting- program coordinators for senior homes and senior drop ins, a drama professor, senior outreach...etc. The point of it being that creative interests and activity have a very significant effect on quality of life... health- mental and physical...no surprise if one participates in this already.
The main idea, that I was hearing, is that the classes are to have a measurable acquisition of skill. So the instruction of the classes is from professionals in the artistic field- Visual Arts, Writing, Drama, Dance.
The age group is the interesting part. There are so many interesting messages from the Elders.
The challenging part is to evoke an interest in the program from a greater number of seniors. They, on the whole, don't seem to think that their lives have been very interesting. !!!

If you have any ideas, thoughts or comments..I would love to hear them.

As the days go by, I realize I am doing this for me future self.

I have come to be astonished by the experience of sitting with a word that describes a feeling and checking out if I even know what that feeling is.

I can do things like this because I am an 'older person'. And that is actually a remarkable activity.

A photo moment for the GRAND OPENING of ART GALLERY of ALBERTA. (this is a filched photo, I have to say, because I forgot my camera, gentle readers, on the table because I was getting a lift and it was more important to have on lipstick and get out the door than pick up the image recording device. Geez huh? a complete lapse in priorities! Not one comment was made on the lipstick. I am sure, certain, in fact, that I could have had one or two(comments) should I have been armed with the camera. Live and Learn....)

The building is a work of art- Randall Stout's and it puts me in mind, she says, reaching for the decorative straw installation that sits in the corner of the salon for this very reason, of my favorite art nouveau architect.. Josep Marie Jujol who worked with and influenced....Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona.

Interestingly enough, one of the main exhibits is Degas!

Joyfulness

This series is on the canvas covered hardboard that is recommended by the 'painting a day' discipline.
6"x 6" is a good little size, hmm?

I love the invitation of space that comes of moving from one size surface to another. How different requests are made from one.

How sometimes, strangely, it is easier to get more detail into a small painting than a large one.

I hope you are enjoying the free form of this series. I am!

Tomorrow is the beginning of the pre grand opening of Art Gallery of Alberta. Lucky me, I have a ticket! I will give my review, hot off the press, when I get back from the tour!

Happiness.
There are 10 images in this series, each of the dimension 6" x 6" x 1".

The challenge, to myself, was simplicity. No editing. The line is pen and India ink that I got from a small shop in Taiwan a few years ago.

The color applied using one brush.

Fluid motion that means this word that means this state of supreme well being.

Then, from here, to see what is the image.

And ...can I just allow it? Can I?

Are you wondering...where is the artwork? What is the result of so much inspiration? Are you?

Me too.
I am wandering around this town in the present tense, ping ponging in the comparison.

And That's OK.

Because I was going to carry on with the travelogue format (I am very fond of my definition of myself as optimistic,

upbeat, seeing the good in it. and I have been looking!) but I have to agree with European friends...in

comparison...this is an ugly city -layout and building wise. Basically it is Sexless and Utilitarian. What can we do about this?

Now that that is off my chest, inhale, I can work with what is here. No excuses.

Beauty, is the sky and the air here... is a picture of the blue that happens, as the sun rises and as the sun sets.
And the cold is the cold outlining each twig or needle on the trees, Wrapping around the warm air that comes from my mouth,making fabulous designs on glass windows. Arrangements made with the cold.

And I am reading...Alla Prima -Richard Schmid He works in oil but the "stand up" style of painting is great, for example...

The Glamourous Life - Merci Paris!

The other day we took a bus tour of historic Paris. L'ile et Le marais(the marsh)is a district that was chateaus of the wealthy after it was drained and filled in. (Isn't this part of Monty Python's Holy Grail)
Then it deteriorated, as did the royalty apparently, to just a seedy area for unsavory types. Then it became a trendy area...this transformation is over the time of a few hundred years. Anyway, this is not so much about the history lesson
The internet can give all that information. My point is that on my last day in Paris I decided to walk to place de la bastille, where the modern opera house is and le marais and ...give my thanks with each step for all that this city represents.

Sludging through the snow in Paris this morning...it was a bit rainy, and I follow the Canal St Martin. After a bit the Canal is a boulevard. I ask an older lady if I am going the right way.
She say yes but it is a very long walk.
It kinda was.

There was a diplomatic line of BMWs behind the Hotel De Ville. A woman walking passed me asked conversationally if I knew who was visiting. I gave a Gallic shrug. She said probably some American Rock Star.

Rivoli.

In the market of restaurants, bistros, cafes,brasseries around St Michel I stop at one that has...boeuf bourguignon! I order, and the waiter starts laughing. It has been 'the thing' since Julie/Julia movie.
Just like the Mona Lisa wasn't notice for centuries then a little press and well, with anything famous, it is the spin.

I taste it and I start laughing.. my mom's stew. Fabulous.

I have walked over 10 km today. So many thoughts, actions, ideas have happened on these streets. And the lights come on.

The Glamourous Life - Versailles Chateau

oh oh... the days on the ticket to Paris are disappearing...there is only one day left.
What else has happened that I haven't mentioned?

We have been fortunate for timing on the metro. It has rarely been busy. But when it is busy...sheesh! Squishy. I find myself counting the pores on
the girl next to me's nose.

But in the evening...the stations have such musical offerings. French horn accoustic harmony in the domed tunnels. Soft guitars around the corners. But the best was the accordion girl.

Like the music in all French Scenes.

-Honorable Mentions-
At the request of my friend Sean, and to Linda's delight, we did go to Pere Lachaise Cemetery. It was a sunny day at the grave yard. Lots of ravens. And old gravestones.And I am so glad for the Wikipedia suggestion of starting at the Gambetta station,
this puts you at the top of the hill. It is acres of meandering to find the graves of the famous, much better to be wandering down the hill.

Sitting on the bus as it drives down streets that I am thinking are too narrow to walk along!!

Today's adventure was Versailles. RER C train. 343 photos.
At all these historical sites, there are always children and students sitting on the floors, drawing, listening to explanations, on tour. also.
I recall that a field trip when I was a child was Al Oeming's Game Farm. This has got to make some very big differences in the forming of the mind.

We stopped for lunch at the Grand Cafe, a relatively new site on the grounds, according to the native French fellow sitting at the shared table.
He said he had come to see the gardens covered with snow, as he had never seen them like this before, as it has been a long time
since there has been this much snow in France. See... you can have a thought like that around here... 'I wonder what the snow looks like in the gardens at Versailles today.' - Of course it would be in French.

This was a quote I saw in a window yesterday while walking the streets of the city of Paris. I meant to catch the bus but the interesting buildings
the details, the shapes emerging from the fog revealing a new interesting building, square,site kept calling me forward. The streets, the squares, then I was across the river via Pont Neuf. Along the quay.
I decided to follow Rue Bonaparte.Academie des Beaux Arts.Contemporary Art Galleries, Designer clothing shops. Le Bon Marche. Designer Clothing shops.

Sonia Rykiel, Jean-Paul Gaulthier, Chanel, Dior, Gucci...

The magic of this city. One can just walk, follow streets with names that are vaguely familiar and come across someplace that is really interesting.
Les Deux Magots. The intellectual's cafe. and just over the way is Cafe de Flore there is a book store in between. I sat there for a while waiting for Simone or
Jean-Paul to whisper something to me. ..maybe it wasn't the right time of day.
I looked around for the contemporary intellectuals... everyone was texting, ipodded, or talking on the phone. Salut!

Did I every tell you how I even came to be here in Paris? It is a story of synchronicity, serendipity, generousity and artistry.
Through posting my paintings on Facebook, I became friends with Marilyn Campiz, an artist with words- The Paris Diaries.
So we are a mutual admiration society of two, for each other's work and for shared interests.
In September...
She asked if I would like to do a portrait of her for her new book. She was in Korea at that time. She would be in Paris for New Year's
She suggested that we meet in Paris. She suggested the Jim Hayne's Sunday Dinner and Swan Bar New Years...
That sounded, well, ...perfectly thrilling.

So I said I would consider the matter. Hmm, hmmm, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I told my friend Linda this story.

My friend Linda called me back...(a month later) and said...'I bought the tickets to Paris.' REALLY

Not only did she buy the tickets, she has paid for everything! the apartment, the delicious food. the tours. A beautiful scarf, fabulous fabric.
THANK YOU Linda. It really has been a fantastic journey!

And from this city of art, in reciprocity, I will do a painting for her ...of this trip. So it is thrilling and thrilling. Art of living.
I met with Marilyn, we talked and talked like old friends that had so much to say to each other. I will make an image for her. Thank you Marilyn Muse for your ideas on wings.

In this collection of images is-
-the entrance to Musee Cluny- Museum of The Middle Ages - tapestry, stained glass, ivory carvings, altar pieces, all manner of fragments from weavings.

-the distance between parked cars. Now here is a puzzle. I was tempted to just stay near the parked cars on this street to see how they unparked.

-a gargoyle. There is an icicle hanging from the nose of this gargoyle and it is dripping. This evokes empathy in me as I have the same condition at the moment.

Today we went to the Musee de Cluny. National Museum of the Middle Ages. The lady and the unicorn tapestry is there. And there was a concert of medieval music in a hall that has all the heads (stone ones)that once were attached to the statues on the front of Notre Dame. They have new heads. There is not a photo of this, just to be confusing, The Notre Dame photo is noteworthy because it is an example of the flying butress.
Victor Hugo saved Notre Dame from being razed by writing the book. (Speaking of books that bring fame to things. Tracy Chevalier)

My practice on this trip, this one to Paris, specifically, rather than the trip of life- mine, in general, is based on a statement made by a shaman in Wade Davis's -The Wayfinders -CBC Massey Lectures.

'I am still. It is the world that is moving to meet me.'

Meeting me, greeting me, embracing me, amazing me, offering- always- all these pleasures...

Eggs and ham on toast! Holy Yummy!

I have the idea that it would be great to eat at a restaurant every meal. Moderation! Because it would be a tragedy of epic proportions to have no desire for croissants or baguettes.

Around the corner, on almost every street is the local Alimentation General. Fortunately we are staying at an apartment. It has a kitchen.

Yesterday..(sweeping cello music from the song,please)

it was snowing. Here is a picture of snow in Paris. (for all of the people in the further northern climates that will, I am sure, not find it an exotic image at all, I can only say..Look at the amazing buildings! There is an exorbitantly high possibility that some famous dead person may have walked right past them. The ghost of History.)

Dwell on your dreams, give your precious energy to this moment rather than to a dying past.

Episode 2...

As I walked along the cobblestone streets beside La Seine, feeling the love, the gratitude, the beauty, that slight nip in the air that makes one's nose drip, admiring the view, I tripped, just slightly, on the uneven ground.

Wow,- I thought, looking down, -how do these women manage with such high he...hello! - A Gold Wedding Band!

Paris gave me a gold wedding ring. It fits perfectly.

There are more words in this post because I discovered that my camera had been quietly sitting in the 'on' position in the bag all night. Little Dickens. So it was very sleepy for the Musee d'Orsay and completely comatose for the Matisse-Rodin sculpture Exhibition, which is really to bad because the Musee Rodin edifice is just amazing as the work in it.

Apparently Isadora Duncan taught classes there. Matisse rented rooms. The grounds, even in the winter are amazing. TREES.

When I see the actual painting it is a breath-taking recognition, like when you unexpectedly meet with someone you know. This 'right here', where I can see so much more that I usually see from the narrow place of placid assumption.

The places, the paintings, the artists, Bonnard, Monet, Pissaro (which was quite mystical. There was one in particular that I could smell the paint and feel myself standing beside him, looking at the same scene, as he painted) Toulouse-Lautrec... but all of the work of Degas...was really the most amazing.

I am still. It is life that is moving to meet me.

Life is episodic, non? so every moment is connected to the next in equal importance. In the same way as I cannot take this step without the previous one. (With the exception of 2nd story doorways with missing balconies) So it stands to reason that everywhere we are has a deep historical significance. On this street, perhaps, was where Napoleon was musing. I don't know.
My point is that wherever we are, something amazing is happening.

You nay have noticed the similarity in the color palette on may of the images. These are the colors of the company that commissioned these works as gifts. Here are the colors. The theme is music. (She is so versatile, our artist.) I love commissions like this. There is not time to wait for the muse to show up. I have to get into my mind and drag her to the canvas. LET'S GO. Different Strokes for Different Folks - the year end challenge is to paint a portrait from an photo one gets via email.
The top one is a 20 minute painting. The lower one took about 2 hours. They each have their interesting features... . I changed the hand position on the left one... it even looks weird in the photo.
I will finish one of these for tomorrow...or later today now that I look at the time.

On this piece...I love how it begins the meander toward the abstract. The shapes begin the morph into other shapes but the idea still holds.

There are many explanations for the origins and meaning of this dance. That it is to develop muscles that ease the delivery of babies. That it brings up the kundalini energy to make babies. That it brings back the shape of woman before the babies.
It is a dance of creation then. Whatever it is that we create in this dance is life. What ever it is we create in life is this dance.
The movement speaks itself.

The belly dancing costumes are marvelous, tinkling coins, sparkling sequins, swishes of fabric.
The energy that moves in the room of women practicing this opening of heart is equally as tremendous with the yoga pants and t-shirt as the tasseled skirt.

It is the geometry of dance itself that creates the costume.
